Freya Hohnen On Murray's New Winery

At the start of vintage, there was only one section of Uncle Murray's new winery completed but the local Shire Council gave us the thumbs up, so we were able to process fruit in our new home. It was a tight fit, but we managed to squeeze all our tanks and barrels together with those from the Fraser Gallop Estate, plus a small area for morning tea, into the one 'shed'. The building is magnificent and a joy to work in, with plenty of natural light, white walls and a groovy red floor to hide any stains.

During the hottest weeks of vintage, the inside temperature didn't exceed 22C, even though it was nudging 40C outside!

The barrel hall should be completed by June and from there the building team can move on to finishing the office block. Until then, Bee's house remains the office and the winery crew will be operating out of a 'transportable', complete with porta-loo.
