McHenry Hohnen, Rocky Road Zinfandel 2008

Tina Gellie, Acting Assistant Editor, Decanter - What We've Been Drinking, Decanter June 2009
Zinfandel is a variety normally associated with California in the form of 16%+ jammy, alcoholic monsters, so I was dubious when offered this by winemaker David Hohnen during a recent trip to London. I shouldn't have been worried though; Hohnen, who before starting this winery with his daughter Freya and brother-in-law Murray McHenry, founded and nurtured Margaret River's Cape Mentelle and Marlborough's icon Cloudy Bay, is a man that knows wine. At a tame - almost elegant - 14%abv, this is all pure, primary, crushed raspberry fruit. Very lush and ripe, with enough acidity to balance and sweet teasing spices. This vintage is due to the market in August, and puts many Californian Zin to shame. Enjoy with venison or game birds.

2010 James Halliday WIne Companion

96/100 Rocky Road Vineyard Margaret River Chardonnay 2007

Very different style to Calgardup Brook; maximum focus on the delicious white peach and grapefruit in classic Margaret River style; an intense and long palate and finish
95/100 Calgardup Brook Vineyard Margaret River Chardonnay 2008
Light straw green; an extremely bright, fresh and lively wine, the fruit and oak seamlessly interwoven on the long and focused palate; is almost painfully youthful, but the future is undoubted

95/100 Rocky Road Vineyard Margaret River Chardonnay 2008 Light straw-green; while it shares many of the characters of Calgardup Brook, the fruit is a little more evident,
the acidity a little softer, and will likely develop a little quicker

90/100 3 Amigos White 2007

89/100 Rocky Road Margaret River Zinfandel 2007

Max Allen, The Weekend Australian, November 2006
A full-flavoured blend of marsanne, chardonnay and roussanne from Margaret River. It tastes of honeyed nuts and is butterscotchy in the mouth, but becomes deliciously refreshing when tackling something simple and fishy like grilled whiting drizzled with lemon.

2005 Tiger Country Red

Cellar Door by Philip Rich, Financial Review Magazine June 2007
David Hohnen has always had a knack for predicting trends (none greater than planting sauvignon blanc at Cloudy Bay in the 1980s) and he's now right on the money with this tempranillo-dominant blend. Full of dark fruits and with a touch of raspberry cola, this delicious, medium bodied and food-friendly wine boasts excellent concentration and balance.

Sally Gudgeon & Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Age, 18th Nov 2007
McHenry Hohnen is a venture between David Hohnen, ex CEO of Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay, and his brother-in-law Murray McHenry. This svelte blend of tempranillo, petit verdot and cabernet sauvignon from Margaret River shimmers with dark berry fruits and chocolate. Firm tannins frame fleshy fruit.
Food: Venison steak.
Ageing: Drink now to 2012.

Winorama
Aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, raspberry, blood, violets, earth, mint and cedar oak. It is all happening here. On the palate medium bodied with red fruit, violet, mint and earthy flavours. Lovely dry fine firm tannins and fresh crisp acidity. Finishes with crunchy red fruit and dried herb flavours. This really builds up with some time in the glass so decant if drinking now. Intriguing and highly interesting.
