McHenry Hohnen Calgardup Brook Chardonnay 2011

Hand picked fruit from the heavily maritime influenced Calgardup Brook vineyard. Natural ferment. Time on lees in French oak barrels. Hands off. Mealy, cinnamon-on-porridge aromas with melon fruit. Creamy textured wine, medium bodied, gently spicy. Really enjoyable flavour spectrum, some leesy-almond bass lines and wet stone-like minerality. All integrated, supple and very long across the palate. There’s great personality here; definitive flavour and texture is the experience. Excellent.

McHenry Hohnen Rocky Road Chardonnay 2011

Witchcliffe is in the deep south of Margaret River, way down low. I've often looked at the sign when in the region and imagined witches live there. Gentle handling from vine to bottle, natural ferment, time in French oak on lees, bottled. Something a touch resinous and smoky in there, but not too distracting. Matchsticky funk of the good kind. White stone fruit medley. Piercing acidity across the palate with a fleshy frame surrounding, has some nuttiness, almost knife edge oxidation, but in a good way. Ample through the finish too. Not clumsy, but cuddly. Pretty delicious. 93 points, Mike Bennie - www.winefront.com.au posted 12th February 2013

McHenry Hohnen Cabernet Merlot 2010

Drills easily into the current drinking space. It's the ideal blend, with the firmness of Margaret River cabernet with some of that appealing plumminess of the merlot. A dab of oak and some fine firmish tannins in support and you have your ideal drink for winter. Ray Jordan - Top 100 Australian Reds - Fresh, The West Australian, 5th July 2012.

McHenry Hohnen Rolling Stone 2009

A blend of cabernet merlot petit verdot and malbec. This was a very good vintage and the fruit really packs a punch. Deep and concentrated with immense power held with a velvety structure of fine ripe tannins and fine-grained oak. Stacks of blackcurrant and dark fruit nuances plus an intriguing meaty character. Lifted floral notes emerge with breathing and the palate gradually releases to a long finish.

McHenry Hohnen Rocky Road Chardonnay 2010

Even if the weather is cold, braised pork with chardonnay is a fine match, especially if the wine in question is this stunner from West Australian producer McHenry Hohnen. Rocky Road is the name of the vineyard and it produces seriously exciting chardonnay, as the 2010 attests. A textural wine with mealy and grilled nut nuances and plenty of citrus and figs, it's creamy mid-palate, with the oak neatly integrated and lovely fine acidity driving it to a super long finish.

McHenry Hohnen Rocky Road Chardonnay 2010

Fruit is sourced from the Rocky Road Vineyard which lies in the headwaters of the Chapman Brook, near Witchcliffe in the south of the Margaret River region. With a northerly aspect, the vines enjoy long days of sunshine, moderated by the vineyard’s southern location. The vines are grown on a single bilateral cordon with a vertically trained canopy. It is a simple and practical format that maximises light penetration and maintains a balanced vine.

Cumquat, nectarine and spice to smell and taste with a startling burst on the palate of intense grapefruit flavour and acidity – the acid line and drive is unswerving and precise. It’s a leaner style, that’s flinty and refined, but has no shortage of flavour, impact or length. Terrific.

McHenry Hohnen Rolling Stone 2009

Given the five Bordeaux varieties that make up this wine, its complexity on the bouquet and palate is no surprise, quality French oak adding its bit; layers of sumptuous fruit have precisely judged ripe tannins in support. A long life ahead.

McHenry Hohnen Calgardup Brook Chardonnnay 2010

Fruit is sourced exclusively from the Calgardup Brook vineyard in the south of the Margaret River region. The Calgardup is a westerly flowing stream; hence the site is open to the sea breezes that have a significant influence on the vineyards of the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge, the hills that connect the two Capes on the south and north of the region. Soils are deep, loamy gravels typical of valley bottoms and idealfor chardonnay which does best in moderately fertile and well protected sites. Allvines on the McHenry Hohnen vineyards are grown on a single bilateral cordon with a vertically trained canopy. It is a simple and practical format that maximises light penetration and maintains a balanced wine.

Nectarine and mixed citrus, spice and a touch of nougat. It’s a tight and flinty wine with mouthwatering acidity, though offset with fleshiness and roundness to balance. Shape and conviction – an excellent cooler style Margaret River Chardonnay.
